Population Space and Place – virtual issue in honour of Bob Woods

Exploring population analysis in geography: essays in honour of Professor Robert Woods
Paul Boyle and Allan Findlay
July 2011

In 1979 Bob Woods published a landmark text Population Analysis in Geography that boldly stated that ‘traditional methods used for studying population geography are out of date: simple analysis and description are no longer adequate’ (Woods, 1979, 279 ). With his recent death in February 2011, we feel as editors of Population, Space and Place that it is appropriate to publish a collection of essays in honour of the journal’s first editor (Woods co-edited the journal from 1995 until 2002 before its name changed from the International Journal of Population Geography to Population, Space and Place). The papers show just how influential Woods’ contribution to population geography has proven to be in encouraging geographers to adopt quantitative demographic methods and to explore the theoretical basis for spatial population analysis. This collection includes papers by some of Woods former research students as well as the final paper published in the journal by Woods (2003) which links theories of demographic change trends in urbanisation in the world’s largest nation, China.
