Abstract.
This presentation sets out the ways in which the retail industry makes use of GIS as a tool for operational and strategic decision making, drawing upon the experience of the 15 major Business-2-Consumer companies that are members of the Demographics User Group (DUG) www.demographicsusergroup.co.uk . It also sets out the ways in which current government ‘open data’ initiatives are of interest to retailers, and speculate upon ways in which retailers may seek to reuse government data. The final part of the presentation will describe ways in which the Economic and Social Research Council are seeking to incentivise MSc and PhD students to conduct research into retailing issues, and the resources that are becoming available to encourage this initiative.
