2001 to 2011 Population Change in England and Wales

Today (16th July) at 11am the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the first results from the 2011 Census in England and Wales. This included population data at the local authority level, rounded to the nearest hundred in 5 year age bands for the following: all persons, male and female. To make this data easier to interpret I have combined these age bands into the following categories: All Ages, 0 to 14, 15 to 29, 30 to 44, 45 to 64 and 65 and over.

This data, while interesting, is better placed in context with the previous 2001 Census in England and Wales. As such I am going to be creating a series of maps to illustrate the change in the population of England and Wales over the past decade using 2001 and 2011 Census data. Before that though here are the population change ‘headlines’:

England and Wales: Population has increased by 7.75%
England: Population has increased by 7.89%
Wales: Population has increased by 5.52%
London: Population has increased by 13.97%

As mentioned above, the data released today is rounded to the nearest hundred, so until the release of the unrounded figures in September this is best indicator of how the population has changed between 2001 and 2011. It should however be noted that if these percentages figures were to change with the use of the unrounded figures, this change should be minimal. If you want further details on today’s release and the 2011 Census in England and Wales in general then please visit the ONS 2011 Census website.
