2001 to 2011 Population Change in London
Following on from my previous post I thought I would look at London in some more detail. In the ten years between 2001 and 2011 every borough’s population has increased – with the exception of Kensington and Chelsea. The breakdowns of the figures are shown below but here are some of the ‘headlines’:
(note: the data released today is rounded to the nearest hundred so some of the figures have a +/-100 error margin attached to them)
• The greatest population increase has been in Tower Hamlets (which also happens to have the greatest increase anywhere in England and Wales) with a 29.56% increase in population, or 57,981 people, now living there in 2011 compared to 2001.
• The City of London had the smallest rate of increase – only 3.05% (or put another way an extra 219 people lived there in 2011 compared to 2001).
• Kensington and Chelsea was the only borough to show a reduction in population. The population decreased by 0.14% between 2001 and 2011. This 0.14% reduction equates to 221 fewer people.
• Newham had the greatest in population in terms of counts. An extra 64,095 people lived there in 2011 compared to 2001.
